Monkeypox Cases Spread to Bandung; Indonesia Records 21 Confirmed Cases

30 October 2023 08:52 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia discovered one monkeypox or Mpox case in Bandung, West Java, adding the tally of confirmed cases to 21 as of October 29, 2023.

"There is currently 21 Mpox cases right now, aside from South Tangerang and Jakarta, a case was discovered in Bandung," said the Head of Communication and Public Service Bureau of the Health Ministry Siti Nadia Tarmizi when confirmed in Jakarta yesterday.

Nadia, however, did not provide further detail about the patient's condition nor the specific location of the case in Bandung. Nadia mentioned that the number was an addition to the 17 cases previously recorded in Jakarta by October 27.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Medical Association mentioned that as of October 13, there were 15 confirmed cases of Monkeypox with one of them recovered in August 2022.

The Head of the Mpox Task Force Hanny Nilasari stated that all of the patients are men with an age range of 25 to 50 years old. They exhibited light symptoms of Mpox and contracted it through sexual contact.

Additionally, the data in Jakarta mentioned another 20 people with negative testing results and two who are still pending.

Hanny also recommended that people with higher risks of infection including people with multipartners, or people who are immunocompromised avoid risky behavior at all costs. "Sexual relations must be conducted safely by using condoms and conducted vaccination," she said.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Health relayed that Mpox vaccination has been given to 251 people with a target of 495 people in total.
