TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi stated that the escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip is a crime against humanity and urged the United Nations to push for a ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties.
Retno made the appeal during the tenth emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to discuss Israel's illegal actions in the occupied Palestinian territories held in New York on Thursday, Oct. 26.
“I am standing here not only as the Foreign Minister of Indonesia, but also as a woman, a mother, and a grandmother. I plead, stop the killing. Protect the civilians. Let in the humanitarian assistance. Use your heart. Use your heart for justice and humanity,” Retno said as quoted from her written statement.
Retno urged the UNGA to take concrete action which the Security Council has failed to do. “We have stood in this hall countless times to alleviate the suffering of our Palestinian brothers and sisters. We have held countless emergency UNGA meetings on the fate of the Palestinian people. But it is equally countless how many times our hopes were dashed due to narrow political interests,” she pointed out.
She called for an immediate cessation of the violence in Gaza, the protection of civilians, and the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid.
Israel's attacks and total blockade of Gaza have killed around 7,000 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The ministry on Thursday released a 212-page document containing names, ages, genders, and official identification numbers of 6,747 victims since Israel began its airstrikes after the Hamas attack on October 7.
