TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said that the country’s creative economy is among the top three in the world after South Korea and the United States (U.S.).
“Our creative economy is the third best in the world. The United States is the first, and South Korea is the second,” Sandiaga said in a working visit in Cirebon, West Java, on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
He explained that three subsectors that contribute greatly to the country’s creative economy sector are cuisine, handicrafts, and fashion.
Apart from that, the local music and film industry also has the opportunity to become one of the sectors that can develop rapidly in the coming years.
“We can surpass Korea with a creative economy. There are three main subsectors, namely cuisine, handicrafts, and fashion. But we also hope for music and film,” the minister added.
He also said that the creative economy sector could reduce the unemployment rate in the archipelago as it has created 24 million jobs in the sector.
Another positive achievement from this sector is that it has helped to boost the domestic economy.
“The creative economy contributes eight percent to the gross domestic product (GDP), one of the highest. [The percentage contribution of ] tourist visits is already more than 20 percent of the ceiling target,” Sandiaga Uno said.
