TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The deportation of 153 Chinese nationals in Indonesia was caused by involvement in an online love scamming scheme. They were repatriated to China using a special plane departing from the Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam.
Riau Islands chief of regional police Tabana Bangun stated that the Chinese nationals were apprehended in a police operation from August to September 2023, conducted in Batam and Singkawang.
"The arrests were conducted in two phases. First in Cammo industrial area on August 29, 2023, and the second in Belakang Padang on September 5, 2023," he said in a press release on Wednesday.
Tabana mentioned that in the August operation, the police were able to secure 90 Chinese nationals consisting of 85 men and 5 women. Meanwhile, in September, police arrested 42 Chinese nationals consisting of 34 men and 8 women. "In total, 132 suspects were arrested in Batam while 21 suspects were arrested under the jurisdiction of West Kalimantan regional police," he said.
The chief of the international relations division of the National Police Krishna Murti mentioned that there were no Indonesian victims, however, the police will not tolerate its jurisdiction being used as a crime hub.
"Therefore, Riau Islands regional police enforced the law under its jurisdiction to show that Indonesia is unsafe for criminals," he added.
The extradition of these Chinese nationals was marked by a transfer agreement from [Indonesian] Immigration to the Ministry of Public Security of China. "With this handover, the suspects and evidence will be extradited to China to face the legal process there," Khrisna concluded.
