TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government officially launched a golden visa for foreign nationals on August 30, 2023. OpenAI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Samuel Altman is the first person to get the golden visa, which allows him to stay in the country for five to ten years.
Altman is granted the golden visa as he has an international reputation and may bring benefits to Indonesia. Aside from a longer stay period, the ChatGPT creator could also enjoy security screening at airports, longer stay periods, and easier entry and exit procedures, as well as no longer needing to apply for a limited stay permit (ITAS).
The golden visa, however, is not for everyone. The Immigration Directorate General at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights stresses on its website that the new visa is intended for qualified individuals who will contribute to the development of the state economy.
Here are the requirements that foreigners must meet to obtain a golden visa like Samuel Altman.
1. Individuals setting up a local company
To obtain a five-year stay permit in Indonesia, an individual must establish a company in the country worth US$2.5 million or about Rp38 billion. For a ten-year visa, an investment of US$5 million or approximately Rp76 billion is required.
2. Corporate investors
Corporate investors can obtain a five-year visa for their directors and commissioners if they invest US$25 million or about Rp380 billion. The investment value must be doubled to gain a 10-year visa.
3. Capital market investors
Individual investors who do not intend to set up a company in Indonesia can also gain a five-year golden visa if they purchase government bonds or shares of public companies, or have savings or deposits worth US$350,000 or about Rp5.3 billion. For a 10-year visa, the investment must be US$700,000 or about Rp10.6 billion.
