President Jokowi Threatens to Shut Down Industries Causing Air Pollution

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo reminded industry players to continue to comply with exhaust emission control regulations to avoid causing air pollution. This is necessary to make a significant impact in preventing a decrease in air quality in Jakarta and its surrounding regions.
He stressed that the government would not hesitate to impose sanctions on industries proven to be violating the rules.
“[Violators] will certainly face sanctions, and can be shut down,” he said after inspecting a public vocational high school in Semarang, Central Java, on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
The head of state recalled that in the previous meeting, he had ordered industries to install pollution control devices. “In yesterday’s meeting, I said that if industries do not want to fix it, refuse to install scrubbers (air pollution control devices), [we will then conduct] strict action because the health that we have to pay for is very expensive,” Jokowi emphasized.
As reported earlier, the government imposed administrative sanctions on 11 industrial companies for being sources of air pollution in Jakarta. The industrial companies include coal-fired power plants, metal smelters, paper companies, and charcoal companies.
