TEMPO.CO, Karawang - The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Karawang Regency, West Java, reported that eight villages spread across four sub-districts are facing a clean water crisis due to the ongoing prolonged dry season.
“The long dry season has caused an impact. Eight villages in four sub-districts have been affected by drought,” Head of Karawang BPBD Mahpudin told Antara on Friday, August 25, 2023.
The eight villages are Parungmulya Village in Ciampel District, Wanakerta Village in Telukjambe Barat District, Tamanmekar Village, Jatilaksana Village, and Kertasari Village in Pangkalan District, as well as Cigunungsari Village, Cintalanggeng Village, and Kutalanggeng Village in Tegalwaru District.
He said the prolonged dry season occurred as a result of El Nino. To meet the need for clean water, the Karawang BPBD has been supplying clean water by tanker every day.
“At least, we can continue to dispatch clean water to the locations to overcome the effects of the drought. There are four to eight trips per day with a capacity of 5,000 liters of water tanks,” Mahpudin explained.
Apart from the BPBD Karawang, other agencies including the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Karawang and the Regional Public Water Company (Perumdam) Karawang also delivered clean water to residents. “We will continue to coordinate and involve the private sector in dealing with the effects of the drought,” Mahpudin said.
