TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Government is planning to export frozen chicken to Japan and South Korea as the two nations want to obtain frozen chicken that has a halal certification.
“They want a halal product in order to become a halal tourist destination,” said the
Head of Quarantine Agency at the Ministry of Agriculture Banun Harpini on Friday, December 16, 2016.
Banun explained that currently, the government is negotiating with the two countries. He explained that the Sanitary and Phytosanitary process (SPS) is not a problem. “Our SPS is okay,” he said.
Other than Japan and South Korea, he said that Papua Nugini and Timor Leste are also interested in importing fowls and eggs from Indonesia. Currently, both commodities have entered the two countries although not in a massive scale.
Banun admits that he is still working on the health standard and the safety of food commodities, mainly in monitoring the bio-security of exported commodities.
