TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto will reportedly embark on a diplomatic mission to Japan on April 2 to April 3 to engage in discussions with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and other high-ranking officials. This information was disclosed by Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi on Monday, April 1, as reported by Reuters.
Tempo has verified this information with the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia, confirming that Prabowo will have a two-day visit to Japan on April 2-3 and is currently in the process of coordinating meetings with Japanese government officials.
This visit to Tokyo follows a trip to Beijing, where the president-elect held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, April 1, marking his inaugural overseas tour within just two months after securing victory in the election to succeed the incumbent leader Joko Widodo or Jokowi.
Japan and Indonesia are comprehensive strategic partners bound by fundamental principles and values. Hayashi told a press conference that Prabowo's visit is anticipated to bolster intimate bilateral cooperation across diverse spheres.
Additionally, the Japanese news agency Jiji reported that Prabowo, a former special forces commander and current defense minister, also intends to convene with his Japanese counterpart, Minoru Kihara.art, Minoru Kihara.
In 2021, Prabowo and Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi inked an accord to facilitate the transfer of defense equipment in a meeting with their Japanese counterparts as Japan seeks to broaden its military and economic collaboration with Southeast Asian nations to counter China.
In December, Japan and Indonesia reached another agreement to diminish other trade barriers.
