TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi confirmed that he would meet with Mahfud Md in his capacity as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, this afternoon, Feb. 01, over the latter’s resignation plan.
“We will meet in the afternoon, perhaps,” he said at Wonogiri Market in Central Java on Thursday, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat’s audio release.
The palace has not yet confirmed where the meeting between the Coordinating Minister and the President will take place.
The state head also said he appreciated Mahfud's decision to step down from the Indonesia Onward Cabinet. “That is his right.”
On Wednesday, Mahfud Md announced his plan to resign from the cabinet during his Tabrak Prof talk show in Aceh. “I will submit an official [resignation] letter to the President after I return from Aceh tomorrow afternoon (Thursday),” he said.
The President has been on a working visit to Yogyakarta and Central Java since last weekend and was scheduled to back to Jakarta today.
Mahfud Md is currently running for vice president in the 2024 presidential election with Ganjar Pranowo, a cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP). The relationship between President Jokowi and the ruling party has been strained recently after the president's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, joined Prabowo Subianto in the upcoming presidential race.
