TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has opened a complex of subsidized eco-friendly houses in Kuningan, West Java.

The houses were built under the Indonesia Green Affordable Housing Program (IGAHP) to provide affordable housing designed with a green concept to low-income residents.

"This is one of the government's initiatives to provide affordable and eco-friendly houses," said Haryo Bekti Martoyoedo, the ministry's Director of Housing Financing Implementation, on Tuesday.

Under the IGAHP, the government is using a strategy for building eco-friendly housing using sustainable building materials and energy-efficient design, he said.

The financing scheme for the IGAHP program supports housing access for low-income people, he added.

"The construction of these houses helps grow the circular economy by utilizing recycled materials," he said.

Martoyoedo said that the green houses can help reduce carbon emissions and waste generation because they use recycled materials.

The housing complex has also received a green building certification, he added.

The houses are the first subsidized ones in Indonesia that have been certified intermediate-level green based on their construction planning, he said.

Their construction also used a passive design that incorporates natural ventilation and lighting.

"We have a target of building 1 million green houses by 2030 through the IGAHP program," he disclosed.
