TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A volunteer of the Indonesian humanitarian NGO Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) in Gaza said on Tuesday, Oct. 31, that the Israeli army continued its bombardment of the Gaza Strip both by sea, land, and air, hitting areas where civilians reside.
“Due to the loud sound of the bombs, bits of sand and iron flew into the Indonesia Hospital where we stand,” a MER-C volunteer Fikri Rofiul Haq told Antara in a voice message.
Fikri said the Israeli army targeted residential buildings near the Indonesian-funded hospital, causing dozens of residents to flee to the hospital as their homes were destroyed to the ground. At least 2,000 residents have fled to the Indonesia Hospital in Beit Lahia, a city in northern Gaza.
According to Fikri, the death toll from the relentless Israeli attacks has reached 8,000 people, including 3,100 children and 1,800 women. The number of injured also reached 19,000, mostly children and women.
“The Indonesia Hospital currently treats 200 inpatients out of the 3,000 injured victims,” he added.
Fikri said people in Gaza are struggling to find food and clean water for hours in the morning until the afternoon amid the chaos following intensive Israeli attacks at night.
MER-C volunteers, he continued, are currently living in the basement of the Indonesia Hospital to access the Internet, which has been cut off by Israel for two days since last Friday, to report on the aid being distributed.
Meanwhile, their initial residence Wisma Indonesia is used only for limited activities as the building was heavily damaged by the Israeli bomb blast.
