Jakarta Councilor Says Water Crisis Linked to Dense Population

9 October 2023 12:30 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission D member, Justin Adrian, suggested that the city administration focus on population control to overcome the water crisis in several areas of the capital.

“The more people there are, the more people will fight over clean water sources,” Justin said in Jakarta, on Monday, October 9, 2023.

Aside from building communal reservoirs and other measures, Justin believed that the water crisis should also be tackled simultaneously through population control, including the Family Planning (KB) program, the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP), and the provision of regulations such as the mandatory property ownership as a requirement to be a Jakarta resident.

“It is recommended that there be a regulation requiring people to have property in Jakarta before they can move in and have an ID card,” he explained.

According to him, the absence of population control leads to a population explosion, which increases the need for clean water.

Apart from that, the large population can also cause air pollution from the use of motorized vehicles to cooling machines.

He also urged the government not only to collect taxes but also to provide impactful solutions to improve the quality of people's lives. “There's not just one solution for one problem in Jakarta, including overcoming the crisis and pollution,” Justin said.

Previously, Jakarta DPRD Commission D member Yuke Yurike reminded the city administration to continue building communal reservoirs or clean water storage areas to curb the clean water crisis.

“It would be better to continue building these communal reservoirs before and after the dry season,” Yuke said.

She emphasized that the construction project should coincide with steps taken by the city administration and Jakarta-owned tap water company PAM Jaya to ensure that residents' clean water needs are met. “Because clean water is a basic need that cannot be substituted,” Yuke stressed.
