TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad called on all elements to maintain peaceful conditions and not be easily provoked by baseless issues related to the relocation of the Rempang and Galang communities.
“Let us all be vigilant against any attempt to divide the people of the Riau Islands Province,” Ansar said in his official statement, on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
He stressed that the relocation plan is aimed at ensuring the continuity of investment and continuing the development of the province for a better and more advanced future, which will thus improve the welfare of the people.
“Let's unite, join hands, and respect each other to achieve security and social order in Batam City,” Ansar said.
He explained that the central government had included the development project of Rempang Island into the Rempang Eco City in the national strategic project due to its enormous economic potential.
“In order to support this project, it is crucial to adopt effective communication with the community to ensure a better understanding of this project and to address any concerns that may arise,” he said.
In addition, all parties involved must comply with the regulations governing this project, namely the Coordinating Minister for the Economy’s Decree No. 7 of 2021.
“This project has the potential to bring great benefits, boost economic growth, and improve the welfare of the people in the Riau Islands and throughout Indonesia,” Ansar concluded.
General Secretary of the Riau Islands Malay Traditional Institute (LAM), Datok Seri Setia Laksana H. Raja Alhafiz, also appealed to all communities to work together to maintain order. “We believe and trust that the government will do what's best for the people. We hope everyone can accept it gracefully,” he said.
As previously reported, Malay indigenous people staged a mass protest at the BP Batam Office. The demonstration ended in chaos, resulting in damage to the BP Batam office and dozens of police injured. The police also arrested 43 people suspected of committing anarchy during the rally.
