IMF Declares Indonesia 'A Source of Hope' Amid Global Uncertainty

5 September 2023 12:16 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo met the Managing Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva at Merdeka Palace on Monday, September 4, 2023. The meeting discusses several agendas including the global economic situation and its sluggish movement.

"[The meeting] discussed the situation of more than 90 countries experiencing economic and financial difficulties, and the dwindling global resources to help these countries," Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati posted on her official Instagram account, @smiindrawati, on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the IMF expressed her appreciation for Indonesia's economic growth and its ability to suppress inflation.

"The Managing Director of IMF mentioned that ASEAN is a bright light amid the difficult global situation. And Indonesia was referred to as a source of joy, source of hope," Sri Mulyani wrote.

Additionally, Georgieva said Indonesia is a learning example for other developing countries. "If Indonesia could do it, other developing countries ought to do it," said Georgieva as quoted by Minister Sri Mulyani.

Previously, Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Wijaya estimated the national economic growth would range from 4.7 to 5.5 percent year-on-year at the end of 2023. Meanwhile, Perry estimated that the national economic growth in the third quarter will reach 5.15 percent, attributed to the trade, logistics, accommodation, and services sectors.
