6.1M Earthquake Hits Banda Sea; Caused by Subduction

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Banda Sea in Maluku today, Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at 11:34 a.m.
"The earthquake was caused by a slab pull motion from Banda subduction," said the head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Daryono, today.
Daryono said that the quake has a normal fault mechanism and is located 278 kilometers away from the northeast of Central Maluku at a 221-kilometer depth.
The earthquake was felt at II-III MMI scale in the Banda area and Saumlaki. Meanwhile, in Waipirit, Tual, Masohi, Geser, Dobo, Labuang, and Sorong, the quake was felt at the II MMI scale.
At 12:00 p.m., BMKG has not recorded any aftershocks. BMKG also did not report any tsunami potential caused by the earthquake.
Daryono urged the public to remain vigilant and calm. He asked the residents to avoid any crumbling and damaged buildings.
