TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Ignasius Jonan recently said that he cannot afford to purchase an electric car since his wage makes it impossible to do so.
“I was told to become the initial example upon owning an electric car. But how could I, the price of a Tesla car equivalent to Mercedes Benz S Class is 5 billion rupiah to import? I am not paid that high,” he said during the Pertamina Energy Forum 2018 in Jakarta.
However, Jonan said that he does own an electric motorcycle valued at Rp15 million, which he said is a good start to go electric. He maintained that the expensive prices of electric vehicles in Indonesia contribute to the difficulties of having Indonesians going electric through its automotive industry.
Ignasius Jonan explained that there might be certain incentives for electric vehicle developers in Indonesia but it must be supported by infrastructures that are needed to essentially support automotive electrification.
