TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - The Baitul Maal Foundation PLN collected the alms from tens of thousands of employees of the State Electricity Company (PLN) up to Rp170 billion throughout 2018 until October. The number has the potential to increase because this year, there are still two more months left.
“We have donated Rp150 billion to the poor,” said Chairman of the YBM PLN Coordination and Strategic Cooperation Herry Hasanuddin, in Bekasi, Monday, November 19.
The donation, said Herry, was carried out through the distribution of basic food packages such as those carried out at the Nuu Waar Islamic Boarding School in Bunut Village, Setu, Bekasi, on Friday 16 November. The distribution was also carried out in five other regions in West Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, Bogor, and Tangerang.
Herry explained there were almost 50,000 Muslim employees in PLN who served throughout Indonesia and distributed their alms income through the YBM PLN every month. According to him, the alms collected by 65 percent were redistributed to the poor in each area of PLN throughout Indonesia.
The remaining 35 percent is used for flagship social programs such as helping to build Islamic boarding schools, mosques, developing technology in the community, and helping disaster victims. “For disasters in Central Sulawesi, we donate Rp2 billion,” Herry said.
The funds, he said, are used to make public kitchens, health, and other social activities. The plan, his foundation will also donate additional alms from employees of Rp3 billion to Palu for the construction of houses for victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster.
