TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo called for the country’s young generation to start Hijrah (meaning to migrate, based on Islamic prophet’s migration) from bad habits to more positive ones.
“Let us Hijrah from hate speeches to truthfulness, from pessimism to optimism, from consumptive behaviors to produce patterns. We need to Hijrah from commotions to unity, peacefulness, because that is what’s essentially needed,” said the president upon welcoming the Indonesia Millenial Movement Congress at Bogor Palace in West Java, yesterday.
The youth group had previously held a similar congress during the National Heroes Day that was hosted by the Maarif Institute for Culture and Humanity. The Congress is the millennials’ commitment to promote peace and prevent extremism and violence.
The president reminded the congress members to maintain the sense of unity since he sees that parts of society has forgotten about diversity and drove them to feel as if they are outsiders in their own country.
Jokowi also called for the young generation to beware of the rising intolerance and extremisms which has been heavily influenced by political incidents that took place in the past.
