TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China’s second-largest e-commerce JD.Com has operated dozens of drones since October 2015 that act as a courier upon sending items to customers in rural areas that lack sufficient infrastructure.
“The use of drones can help us save time, from days by land transportation to just in several minutes,” said Gloria Li, JD.Com Corporate Vice President today. The drones are currently limited to carrying items under 10 kilograms.
The total delivery distance of JD.Com’s entire drone fleet combined is said to exceed 120,000 kilometers. The drones itself could send packages in a 30 minute to an hour of flight duration.
According to Gloria, other than efficiency, the use of drones is part of the company’s attempt to improve its consumer services. JD.Com is even currently developing drone technologies that will be capable of carrying packages weighing more than the current weight limit, eyeing on hundreds of kilograms per delivery.
“This is a dependable technology which is cost effective upon reaching our product marketing areas that are far-reaching,” said the JD.Com Corporate Vice President.
