TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo called for the public to take lessons from choral groups or choirs upon maintaining harmony which can be applied in everyday activities. He said that choirs are able to combine various voices to create beautiful melodies.
“We can learn so much about tolerance and collective respect from choirs because that is what Indonesia needs,” said the President upon welcoming winners of the Church Choir Party at Bogor Palace today.
The life lessons, Jokowi maintained, can be seen in choir members’ ability to suppress their ego and accept differences. “Sopranos, tenors, and basses, must respect each other’s voices,” said Jokowi.
President Jokowi asserted that a choir’s beautiful end-result is a product of non-egotistical members that are able to work with each other in harmony. He asserts that several elements such as unity and brotherhood which exists within a choir are what the country currently can learn from.
“Don’t let intolerance, extremism, or egotistical rightfulness spread even larger which will create a divided society. That is truly dangerous,” warned President Jokowi.
