TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) successfully reintroduced two crested serpent eagles to the wild at the Hutan Raya Bunder Park in the Gunung Kidul Department, Yogyakarta, on Monday, November 5.
Bantul and Gunung Kidul BKSDA Region 2 Conservation Head Kuncoro said that the eagles were confiscated from members of the public who kept the eagles inside a cage as a pet.
The eagles had to be trained to be self-sustainable for two years prior to their reintroduction. “The eagles reintroduced to the wild were female and male,” said Kuncoro on Monday.
The BKSDA Gunung Kidul cage currently houses 18 eagles from numerous species types that are being trained before their eventual reintroduction to the wild.
The many cases of protected wildlife being kept as pets drove the BKSDA to furiously announce public warnings about the status of the eagles in the region, which has been deemed as a protected species.
In February of 2018, Kuncoro announced that the BKSDA reintroduced eagles in a reintroduction program which unfortunately lasted only 5 weeks in the wild after the protected animals became subject to illegal hunting.
