Rescue workers lay out recovered belongings believed to be from the crashed Lion Air flight JT610 at Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta, Indonesia, October 30, 2018. On Monday, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Boeing Co said they were providing assistance in the crash investigation. The accident is the first to be reported involving the widely sold Boeing 737 MAX, an updated, more fuel-efficient version of the manufacturer's workhorse single-aisle jet. REUTERS/Edgar Su

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lion Air Corporate Communications Strategic Danang Mandala Prihantono said the passengers who boarded the aircraft with the tail number JT 610 that plunged into the waters of Tanjung Karawang on Monday, Oct. 29, would receive compensation.

The compensation, Danang said, was as stipulated in the Transportation Ministerial Decree No. 77 of 2011 on airline responsibility. “Yes, the compensation will be based on the regulation,” Danang told Tempo via a phone call, Wednesday, Oct 31.

As noted in the decree, a passenger who died during an airplane crash due to the incident or any factor related to the airline was entitled to earn compensation amounted to Rp1.25 billion, while a victim who was deemed totally disabled by the doctor within 60 days since the incident would receive Rp1.25 billion.

However, the corporate was still waiting for the status from the evacuation process and the search of victims and plane wreckage. “The regulation exist, so we have to wait for the status from the evacuation process, and that takes time. But, the compensation and other things will be based on the existing law,” Danang explained.

Earlier, state-owned insurance company Jasa Raharja ensured the protection for all passengers of Lion Air JT 610. “We offer our condolences after the incident, and all passengers are ensured to have protection from Jasa Raharja,” said Budi Rahardjo, president director of Jasa Raharja, in a written statement on Monday, Oct 29.

Budi explained that referring to the Law No. 33 and Finance Ministerial Decree No. 15/2017 the dead victim would receive compensation worth Rp50 million while for injured victim, the corporate would cover the hospital treatment maximum at Rp25 million.
