TEMPO.CO, Ternate - The Ternate Regional Government in North Maluku, was asked to take care of Fort Kastela, the historical site of the Portuguese heritage that was not well maintained and some of its parts were damaged.
"Fort Kastela has historical value for Ternate because, in the fort, Sultan Khairun was cunningly killed by the Portuguese," said the cultural expert in Ternate, Muhammad Saiful on Thursday, October 25, 2018.
The fort built by the Portuguese in the 15th century was a silent witness to the heroism of the Ternate Sultanate fighters under the leadership of Sultan Babullah when expelling the Portuguese.
Muhammad Saiful said that if the Ternate Administration could not revitalize the Fort because of the budget limitation, at least they could maintain its cleanliness. "So it would look neat and beautiful," Saiful said.
The Kastela Fort has been visited by domestic and foreign tourists. Ternate Mayor Burhan Abdurahman said that the Ternate Administration had programmed to carry out the revitalization.
Burhan said that the Ternate Administration could not directly handle it. "Because the fort is still the responsibility of the North Maluku Administration," Burhan said.
