Sibolga Hit by 5-magnitude Quake; No Tsunami Potential

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5-magnitude earthquake shook North Sumatra`s city of Sibolga on Friday, October 19, at around 5:12 local time.

"There is no tsunami potential," as reported by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) through its Twitter account @infoBMKG.


The hypocenter was at 23 kilometers east of Sibolga sea at the depth of 146 kilometers. BMKG added that the epicenter was at 1.81 north latitude and 98.98 east longitude.

Previously on Monday evening, Oct. 15, an earthquake also hit the neighboring province Aceh. A 5.4 Richter scale quake jolted Meulaboh, the capital of West Aceh, around 524 kilometers away from Sibolga.

An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 also hit South Buru, Maluku, at 3:10 today. BMKG recorded that it was centered at 27 kilometer of northeast Ambalau-South Buru sea at the depth of 10 kilometers. The tremor could be felt in Ambon and Seram area, and no potential of a tsunami.
