TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of the potential for the flash flood in several regions in Indonesia due to increasing rainfall for the next week.

“Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, and Papua are the areas that have the potential to be affected by flash flood because they are in the vicinity of active tectonic zone, namely the foot of the structural hill that is steep and elongated,” said Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawari at the BMKG Office, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, Monday, October 15.

Scientifically, the flash flood is controlled by three main conditions. First, the geological condition that occurs in the upstream, from the rivers that flow in the mountainous zone with active tectonics. Second, the seismic condition with the strength ranging from the magnitude of 2.5 to 4. Third, the existence of extreme rainfall.

These three conditions can lead to landslides or rock debris on mountainous river slopes and valleys or active hills in the upstream,” Dwikorita said.

BMKG calls on people to increase their awareness of the threat of flash flood, especially people who live along the riverbanks.
