KPAI: Educational Institutions Not for Rallying Political Support

TEMPO/Prima Mulia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) suspects that political agendas and political rallying pose a threat toward education institutions that are prone to be infiltrated by political agendas.

“People or political parties showed tendencies to use the education institutions as a means to rally political support,” said Jasra Putra, KPAI’s civilian rights and children’s participation commissioner when Tempo reached him on Wednesday.

According to Jasra, the 2014 presidential election saw KPAI report 280 cases while the regional head elections (Pilkada) saw 28 cases of child exploitation linked to politics. KPAI was baffled that a political candidate rallied support from high school students in Bekasi City.

“Political figures or presidential hopefuls are allowed to visit academic institutions, but do not rally support from these locations,” said Jasra. KPAI are focused on an SMAN 87 high school teacher who allegedly enticed its students to hate presidential hopeful Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

Furthermore, Jasra claims that there is a large potential for presidential hopefuls to rally support from students in academic institutions for the upcoming presidential election. Such case involves political leaders in the presidential election race visiting a pesantren, or Islamic boarding schools.
