TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the devastating earthquake in Palu, Central Sulawesi, hundreds of automated teller machines (ATM) in the regions could not operate normally and now were inactive. Thus, the machines were susceptible as the target of looting.
“BRI continuously coordinates with related parties to save the assets, either the office or the electronic networks, such as ATM,” said state-owned lender BRI corporate secretary Bambang Tribaroto via a phone call in Jakarta, Wednesday, October 3.
Bambang mentioned a total of 87 BRI ATM in the disaster-hit region damaged. As a preventive action, BRI had withdrawn all ATM money for security purposes. “We are striving to recover all ATM. We expect by Sunday in the second week of October all BRI networks will return to operate normally,” he said.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit Palu City and the vicinity on Friday, September 28. Due to the slow distribution of aid and supplies for the victims, looting acts occurred. People not only looted foods and beverages in markets but also vehicles and electronic products.
Last reports suggested that the police foiled the attempt of looting to five ATM in Palu City, owned by Bank Mandiri, Bank BRI, Bank BCA, and Bank Danamon.
Meanwhile, state lender BCA corporate secretary Jan Hendra mentioned its four branch offices and 34 ATMs in Palu could not be operated due to lack of electricity supply. “We have deployed teams from Makassar and Jakarta to help for the recovery process,” he said.
