68 Inmate Return after Escaping upon Palu Quake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Penitentiary of the Law and Human Rights Ministry said as many as 68 convicts, who escaped during the earthquake in Palu and Donggala, Central Sulawesi, have returned to the prison.

“The DG previously announced 1,425 inmates escaped from the prison, now the figure decrease to 1,357,” said Ade Kusmanto, spokesperson of Penitentiary DG, on Tuesday, October 2.

Ade explained all inmates in Palu prison were allowed to visit their relatives, but they must make a report on Thursday, October 4.

As many as 515 of 581 prisoners escaped from Palu Penitentiary, 410 of 463 inmates from Palu Prison, 75 of 83 inmates and three babies from Palu Women’s Penitentiary, 24 of 29 inmates from Palu Children’s Penitentiary, and all 324 inmates from Donggala Prison.

The detainees would be placed in an open field of the penitentiaries considering 80 percent of the building badly damaged due to the earthquake in Palu and Donggala.

The current total of inmates in 15 prisons in Central Sulawesi province amounted to 1,863 out of 3,220 inmates, Ade concluded.
