Minister Warns Regional Govt' on Hiring Non-Tenured Teachers  

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy threatens to impose a sanction against regional governments or school principals that continues to recruits non-tenured teachers.

"If there is a regional administration that violates [the policy], even though the decree is not from the regional administration, but from the school principal or other institution, sanctions will be imposed," Muhadjir said at the Bina Graha Building, Jakarta on Friday, September 21, 2018.

Muhadjir said that the sanction has been stated in a circular letter issued in 2016. So far, there has been no case example of regional administration or principal that recruits non-tenured teachers.

"But if there is [the case], the sanction will be related to provisions of government assistance, namely the non-physical DAK [special allocation funds], and BOS [school operational assistance]," Muhadjir said.

Muhadjir ordered the regional governments and school principals to cooperate with the central government. "We expect the political will or the good intention from the regional government and school principals," Muhadjir said.

Currently, the number of the non-civil servant or non-tenured teachers working in public schools is 735,825 people.

Those who do not meet the age requirements who had registered as civil servant candidate will receive an alternative solution through the examination of government employees with work agreements (P3K).

The selection is still done to identify the quality of the teachers. For those who did not pass the P3K test, the government has prepared another alternative by providing a minimum salary equal to the minimum wage in each region.
