TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) head Bambang Brodjonegoro estimated the direct economic impact of the upcoming IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings could reach Rp5.9 trillion in 2017-2018.
“Particularly with the infrastructure investments for 2017-2018 that amount to Rp3 trillion,” he said at the Finance Ministry in Jakarta on Monday, September 17, 2018.
Bambang said the government was expediting the construction of a number of infrastructure projects in Bali—including the Ngurah Rai underpass, the Benoa Port, and the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue—ahead of the meetings.
Besides the infrastructure investments, Bambang added, the country would also receive at least Rp1.1 trillion the spending of tourists, both domestic and international ones.

“Of course this will depend on the national committee on how it can convince participants to spend more, with estimates that one tourist would spend USD150 daily aside from accommodation and travel expenses,” he said.
Bambang said the meetings would be attended by 189 countries with 19,800 participants comprising 5,050 delegates and 14,750 non-delegates. Viewed from their countries of origin, he estimated there would be some 13,000 foreign participants and 1,750 domestic ones.
Bali Governor I Wayan Koster, meanwhile, said the province was set to host the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings. “We are honored and proud,” he said, while ensuring the comfort and security of Bali during the meetings.
“Without these meetings, our economic growth would probably only reach 5.9 percent,” he said.
