TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahead of the 2018 Asian Para Games, which slated to take place on October 6-13, the Social Ministry held a special training for 330 volunteer coordinators who would accompany disabled athletes and all elements participating in the games.

“The Social Ministry will thoroughly monitor the volunteer assistance for disabled athletes and spectators,” said Social Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta, Wednesday, September 12.

In a written statement, the minister said the assistance for the disabled community requires skills, ability, and knowledge on the disability limitation and restriction. Thus, the volunteers must acknowledge the disability preference including identifying the challenges, the interaction, and disability accessibility.

Agus Gumiwang asserted the ministry would thoroughly monitor the process in a bid to create Indonesia as the disability-friendly host of Asian Para Games. The effort was mandated in the Presidential Decree No. 2/2016 on National Organizing Committee of 2018 Asian Para Games.

Aside from establishing training for volunteers, the ministry would facilitate transportation for all elements in the Asian Para Games and conduct dissemination program for people with disability in social home care and social welfare institution (LKS), as well as conduct monitoring and evaluation on the facility used during the games.

Minister Agus added that the ministry is determined to help coordinate the Games Legacy of Asian Para Games to create Indonesia as an accessible country for people with disability.

“A good service, hospitality, accessibility, and security for athletes with the disability are important considering this is an Asian-level event. The world’s eyes are into Indonesia and see how we honor and provide equality to all elements participating in the 2018 Asian Para Games,” said Agus Gumiwang.

The 2018 Asian Para Games (INAPG 2018) is the first major international multi-sport event in Asia that would be held in Indonesia. The event aimed at fulfilling the rights of sports for people with disability.
