TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police have captured 29 teenagers who were involved in a violent fight between students—also known as tawuran—that caused the death of a 16-year-old high school student from SMA Muhammadiyah. The tawuran happened in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta on Saturday morning, September 1st.
"From the 29 students arrested, we have named 10 as suspects," South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Indra Jafar said on Thursday, September 6.
He said that all teenagers who were named as suspects were students of SMA Negeri 32, who call themselves the Geng Sparatiz.
According to the police, the fight was planned by two gangs—Sparatiz and Redlebbels—whose members communicated through social media. "They challenged each other on social media and made a pact to meet to engage in a fight," Indra said.
However, the fight also involved students from other high schools, including Madrasah Annajah dan SMA Moh. Husni Thamrin. Students of these three high schools often hung out together at the Gusuran Donat (Gusdon) area in Pesanggrahan, Jakarta Selatan.
Indra said the students were named suspects after admitting that they hacked the victim with a machete. The also admitted to beating, throwing acid, and hitting the victim with vehicles. They also admitted to possessing sharp weaponry.
Slipi, the victim, died before he was taken to the hospital because of severe wounds on his head, abdomen, and legs. "They even ran over the victim's hip with a motorcycle and stepped on his neck," Indra lamented.
Suspects who are still teenagers are facing a maximum prison sentence of 5 years, while suspects who are considered adults may be jailed for up to 15 years.
"Of the 10 suspects, one is considered an adult," Indra said.
