TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Greenpeace Indonesia demanded the government seek a way out to mitigate air pollution in the capital, especially during the 18th Asian Games held on August 18 until September 2, 2018. According to Greenpeace, the air quality in Jakarta in the past month is classified as unhealthy.

"The government must find a real solution because the world's eyes are on Indonesia as the host of Asia's largest sports event," said Greenpeace Indonesia Climate and Energy campaigner Bondan Andriyanu in a written statement on Tuesday, August 21, 2018.

Bondan said that in the last 22 days, the air quality in Jakarta has been classified as unhealthy. Bondan added that according to the air monitoring application AirVisual, Jakarta has the lowest air quality among major cities in the world on August 11, 2018.

"The daily average rate recorded by the PM 2.5 monitoring station in Kemayoran, Jakarta owned by BMKG shows 87.3 μg/m³," Bondan said.

On the same day, the Air Pollutant Standard Index (ISPU) monitoring station in Jagakarsa, Kelapa Gading and Kebon Jeruk owned by the city administration also classified the air quality as unhealthy.

According to Bondan, the government must immediately reduce sources of pollution that degrade Jakarta's air quality. Bondan added that this must be done clearly as it involves ministries and related stakeholders. "Starting from the transportation issue, industry, until power plants issue that must be limited and strictly regulated," Bondan added.
