1,091 Mt. Rinjani Hikers Evacuated, One Dead

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 1,091 Mount Rinjani hikers that were trapped when 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on early Sunday, had been successfully evacuated.

“From July 29 until 31, the number of hikers evacuated are 1,091 people. Among them, there is one dead casualty,” said Head National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, at the Press conference in Jakarta BNPB office on Tuesday, July 31.

He explained that there were 723 Foreign Nationals and 368 Indonesian hikers that had been evacuated. The evacuation had been conducted since July 29 by the Military Force (TNI), Police, volunteers, Mapala, Basarnas, and SAR.

“There were 6 Indonesian hikers in Lake Segara Anak. The evacuation team has been working since last night and found the six hikers there,” Suyono claimed.

Muhammad Ainul Takzim, the climber from Makassar who died at Mount Rinjani during the earthquake had been evacuated by using a helicopter.

During the process, the evacuation team has found seven locals in Cave Susu. Three people evacuated by using the helicopter and the rest of the people who consist of two porters and one guide were evacuated through land routes.

On early Sunday, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Lombok, Sumbawa and Bali. BNPB noted until Tuesday the death toll reach 17 people in total. In addition, as many as 401 people were injured. The number of evacuees currently reaches 10,062 people spread across 13 evacuation points.  The quake damaged 5,448 houses, 15 education facilities, 5 health facilities, 55 religious facilities, 37 kiosks and one bridge.
