TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that both Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and Democrat Party executive Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono would lack the necessary experience if they decide to run for presidency in the 2019 election. The VP suggested instead that both politicians should run in the 2024 presidential race.
“What I say to the younger generation, ‘You’re time is in 2024’,” said Jusuf Kalla in an interview with Tempo at the Vice Presidential Office on Tuesday, July 2.
Jusuf Kalla further reasoned that Agus Harimurti was not seasoned enough to run for president next year, allowing for Agus' low electability rate based on several pollsters. Kalla added that the right position for Agus was vice president hopeful should the later insist on vying in the 2019 presidential election.

Kalla went on to say that he also preferred that Anies Baswedan continued to spearhead the capital as opposed to running for president next year.
“Anies Baswedan is similar to Agus Harimurti. Both are individuals that need more experience,” Kalla said.
Jusuf Kalla explained that Anies Baswedan would have enough preparation for the 2024 presidential election if he was successful in leading Jakarta, which would be viewed as an accomplishment when he decided to run for president.
