TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Jakarta fire department Subejo said that victims of the Transportation Ministry Office fire this morning perished because of the thick smoke and lack of oxygen.

“The victims died because of asphyxiation caused by the thick smoke,” said Subejo at the West Medan Merdeka Street in Central Jakarta today.

Subejo stated that the fire is considered to be within the small scale category but the smoke that the fire caused had already spread all across the office space.

The two deaths in the fire were building contractors who were maintaining the office during the firem while the third victim was a transportation ministry staff member.

According to the fire department that mobilized 17 fire trucks, the transportation ministry office caught fire this morning on Sunday, July 8 at around 04:10 western Indonesia Time (WIB). Meanwhile the victims were discovered on the fifth floor, eighth, and twelfth floor.
