TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno appealed to the public to understand the prohibition on selling and slaughtering livestock for Eid El-Adha (Islamic holy day to sacrifice) during 2018 Asian Games in several areas including in equestrian arena in Pulomas, East Jakarta.

Sandiaga said on Friday, July 6, the ban was ruled in two gubernatorial instruction in 2017 and 2018.

According to Irma Budiany as the head of Farms and Animal Health Department at East Jakarta's  Marine, Agriculture, and Food Security Agency, the prohibition was aimed at preventing virus of livestock to horses for its participation in the 2018 Asian Games. The ban will take effect within 4 kilometers from Pulomas Equestrian arena.

Sandiaga Uno expected the community to understand and support the regulation for the sake of the establishment of the 18th Asian Games. “Hopefully the public agrees with it,” he said.

The deputy governor said the city administration had inspected the livestock breedings around the venue. As many as 17 farms and 40 slaughterhouses were monitored and they were also given explanations on the matter.

According to Sandiaga, Indonesian Asian Games Organizing Committee (INASGOC) had the international certification for equestrian at Pulomas. “It is a certificate of the equine disease-free zone (EDFZ) from World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) as the requirement to hold Asian Games for horserace riding,” he added.

The 18th Asian Games will be held at Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2, 2018. While Eid al-Adha is predicted to fall on August 22 hence the ban is regulated temporarily through gubernatorial instruction.
