TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Representatives of music-video app Tik Tok visit the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to discuss the blocking of the application. Director General of Applications and Informatics at the minstry Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said Tik Tok representatives came on their own initiative.

“This afternoon they will go there (Kemenkominfo Office), they come on their own initiative, it's okay. We want to know,” said Semuel when met at the Asia IoT Business Platform event at Ritz Carlton Jakarta, earlier today, July 4.

As previously reported, the government blocked the Tik Tok application on Tuesday afternoon. In its written statement, Communication Minister Rudiantara said the site is considered to contain a lot of negative content for children.

Rudiantara stated that his office has also contacted Tik Tok to clean up the negative content on the site. The shutting down is similar to Bigo app some time ago.

Previously, Semuel said, the government temporarily banned the site and asked the related parties to clean up the negative content. After the negative content is cleared, the government will reactivate the site. “Actually a live streaming platform like Tik Tok is great for expressing creativity, but it cannot be misused for negative things,” he said.

Rudiantara stated that his ministry has coordinated with the Ministry of Women and Child Protection and the Indonesian Child Protection Commission regarding the banning of Tik Tok app.

Tik Tok is a social media platform from China, based on music videos that are popular in Indonesia. The application offers a variety of special effects to make short videos more appealing to users such as shake, vibrate, and 3D stickers.
