BI Interest Rate Rises, Rupiah Finally Strengthens

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah closed today at Rp14,301 per US dollar, strengthening by 0.33 percent.

Based on RTI Business at 17:20 local time, the rupiah opened at Rp14,326 per US dollar. Throughout the day, the rupiah moved in the neighborhood of Rp14,276 per US dollar to Rp14,403 per US dollar.

While the news is written, referring to Bank Indonesia's website, Jakarta inter-bank spot dollar rate (Jisdor) showed the rupiah exchange rate was at 14,404 per US dollar, weakening by 1.65 percent compared to that of early this week.

On Thursday, the rupiah closed at Rp14,394 per US dollar, slipping by 1.52 percent or 215 points. Throughout today’s trade, the rupiah fluctuated between Rp14,367-Rp14,415 per US dollar.

The greenback tumbled by 0.27 percent or 1.353 points to 94.959 at 09:56 local time. Earlier, the US dollar opened at 0.016 points, or weakening by 0.02 percent at 95.296, after closing at 95.312, or up by 0.02 percent or 0.022 points on Thursday, June 28.

Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia decided to increase the 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate (7DRR) by 50 bps to 5.25 percent in a bid to stabilize the rupiah. The decision was made through a meeting of BI board of governors in Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Friday, June 29.
