TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko `Jokowi` Widodo is targeting the third runway at Soekarno-Hatta Airport to start operating in July 2109. With the addition of this new runway, aircraft movement is projected to increase.

The airport currently holds 81 movements per hour. By next year it is expected to hold up to 120 movements per hour.

"As the largest airport in Indonesia, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport needs to have more runways to accommodate the increasing number of passengers and aircraft movement," Jokowi said Thursday, June 21.

Jokowi said the construction of an additional runway is done to anticipate the surge of passengers. Currently, the number of passengers at the airport is 63 million per year. By 2021, it is expected to reach 100 million passengers.

The third runway was built with an investment of Rp2 trillion, on a land area of 216 hectares.

Only 42.85 hectares is controlled by Angkasa Pura II (AP2), which is appointed to carry out the development. The remaining land area of 173.15 hectares will be acquired gradually.

President Director Angkasa Pura II Muhammad Awaluddin said the existence of the third runway at this airport will also make flight traffic smoother thus increasing the number of flights to Indonesia.

"This will certainly affect the growth of Indonesia's economy and tourism; as new aviation routes will be available," Awaluddin said.
