TEMPO/Yosep Arkian

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned the public over the extreme weather conditions that are predicted to continue happening across several Indonesian regions. This extreme weather is said to be the cause of the capsized boat in Lake Toba several days ago.

“Be watchful for extreme weather conditions, even though the majority of Indonesian regions have entered the drought season,” said Head of BMKG Dwikora Karnawati on Wednesday, June 20.

Based on BMKG’s monitoring, the weather anomaly will continue to happen in the upcoming week such as low pressures in the Pacific Ocean, East of the Philippines.

Other causes of the extreme weather are caused by the moist air from the Indian Ocean and the cyclonic circulation at the Indian Ocean West of Bengkulu, the Karimata Strait, and Makassar Strait. The humid air then meets at the Southern region of Kalimantan, Bangka Belitung’s Southern waters, South Sumatra-Lampung, Bengkulu, up to the Indian Ocean.

That all factors in as the main cause of the extreme weathers such as thundering light rain and strong winds that takes place in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, and Southeast-Central-South Sumatra.

BMKG predicts that the drought season will peak at around August to September and will end in November of this year.
