Jakarta Police Set New Requirement for Driver's License Issuance

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - People willing to create or renew their driver's licenses (SIM) in the capital will be required to submit the results of a psychology test to the police. The new requirement is aimed at preventing traffic accidents due to drivers’ mental problems.
“It’s a preventive measure. We don’t want people suffering psychological disorders to own a driver's license,” said Jakarta Traffic Police official Comr. Fahri Siregar in a phone call with Tempo today.
Fahri explained the requirement of a psychology test will be effective beginning June 25, 2018. Earlier, the police imposed the regulation on general driver's license. The Jakarta Police are adopting the same regulation for all classes of license based on Article 81 (4) of Law No. 22/2009 on traffic and transportation mode and Article 36 of Police Regulation No. 9/2012 on driver's license.

According to Fahri, the requirement of a psychology test will affect areas under the supervision of the Jakarta Police, including Depok, South Tangerang, Tangerang City, Bekasi City, and Bekasi Regency.
The police plan to synergize with two professional psychology test institutions, which will be under the former's guidance and supervision. People can later visit the institutions' offices directly or ask for assistance from SIM officers in advance.
