Singapore PM and Donald Trump Meet behind Closed Doors

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Taking the role as the host nation to accommodate the meeting between United States President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong held a private meeting with Donald Trump on Monday, June 11, at the ‘Istana’ (State Palace).

The last time PM Lee met with US President Donald Trump happened on October 2017 when Lee was on an official state visit to Washington DC following an invitation by Donald Trump. Singapore’s foreign affairs ministry stated in a written statement that despite it being a closed meeting, it had run smoothly with both men discussing regional issues and the global development.

“Both head of states asserted the good relationship between Singapore and the United States in the field of economics, defense, and security,” said the ministry.

Trump thanked Lee for allowing Singapore to be the location of the inaugural meeting between the US president and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. Furthermore, Trump said that the United States will continue its commitment to be involved in regional issues and support Singapore as head of ASEAN.

Meanwhile, President Trump also received an invitation from Singapore President Halimah Yacob to ask his participation in the sixth ASEAN summit that will be held this upcoming November. He is also asked to attend the 13th East Asia summit.
