TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Democratic Party Chairman Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) mentioned about the country’s relatively high poverty rate despite having been reduced since 2007 during a Democratic Party event at the Jakarta Convention Center, Jakarta, on Saturday.

“The current problem and the challenge that we face now is the relatively high poverty, even though it has continued to lower since 2001,” said the sixth Indonesian president.

The other topic of lecture SBY gave in the event was about inequality and social-economic disparities, which he argues that it is not an Indonesian-only problem. He explained that disparities will build up in countries with a high economic growth rate.

“Based on those two most fundamental problems, the question is what the country’s exact duties and obligation is and what are ours?” said SBY who argued that the problems can be overcome through strategic policies.

SBY further suggested the government to take less attention off of building objects and suggested that the human quality factor must be noticed too.
“The programs meant to reduce poverty must continue to be conducted,” said SBY.

SBY mentioned about financial assistance that can come from businesses in the form of corporate social responsibility (CSR) that can help reduce the number of poverty in Indonesia.
