TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rector of Paramadina University Firmanzah asked the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Menristekdikti) Mohammad Nasir to the plan on reviewing students` social media account in an attempt to prevent the spread of radicalism.
"The minister should review the plan," Firmanzah said when met at Central Jakarta on Saturday, June 9.
Firmanzah believed there are more effective alternatives to prevent radical understanding among students, such as by doing a number of approaches.
“Like drafting a national Community Service Program, national apprenticeship, jamboree meeting, state defense meeting,” he said.
Minister Mohammad Nasir asked the new college students to register their social media accounts at their respective universities to monitor the indication of radicalism on campus.
According to the Minister, social media becomes one of the facilities to oversee radical dissemination. Therefore, to ensure students are safe from radicalism, Nasir asked the college to track the digital record of the students.
Firmanzah said the Ministry does not need to register the social media accounts of college students. He feared that it would harm the freedom of democracy within the campus.
He added the Ministry should also clarify radical criteria as it has broad meaning these days. The Minister will gather and talk about radicalism on campus with the state university rectors on June 25.
