TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Constitutional Court chief justice Jimly Asshiddiqie said the government is planning to establish the National Harmony Council (DKN).
"Everything has been completed, the members [have been selected]," Jimly said when attending a special coordination meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 5.
Previously, the formation of DKN had been discussed in early 2017. Back then, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto said that DKN was actually formed to handle horizontal conflicts at a national scale.
Jimly said the importance of the DKN is currently being discussed. According to Jimly, the DKN will consist of 17 members.
Jimly said the DKN members would be selected from various backgrounds, such as human rights activists and independent figures.
"Religious figures are also, 17 people," he said.
The National Harmony Council will be tasked with handling horizontal conflicts at a national scale. Jimly added that the DKN will prioritize mediation as a mechanism to approach conflicts.
Former Minister of Justice Muladi said the government is currently drafting a regulation as the legal basis for the formation of the DKN. The appointment of its members will be stipulated by a Presidential Decree.
