TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Nurses Association or PPNI strongly condemned the shooting of Razan Al-Najjar, a Palestinian health-care nurse volunteer in Gaza, by the Israeli soldier.
“Condemning the deliberate or negligent party over the death of a nurse as the health team on a humanitarian mission,” said Chairman of the Foreign Relations Division of PPNI Central Board Masfuri in a written broadcast on Monday, June 4.
Masfuri said nurse is a profession that is educated to prioritize health and humanitarian interests and is also able to suppress human fear and natural terror in carrying out its practical mission. Nurse, he said, is not the target to be paralyzed in the conflict.
"Health workers and health facilities are humanitarian facilities, not targets to be paralyzed and destroyed by anyone in any conflict and war," he said.
PPNI, said Masfuri, called on the International Nurses Council and the world's professional nursing association to take concrete action, to protect nurses from danger in carrying out missions in their respective countries.

In addition, PPNI also urged the UN and the Security Council to take effective concrete actions, to stop brutality to the health workers and health missions as human rights.
Masfuri said, PPNI also asked the Indonesian government to make an official statement condemning the Israeli army's brutality to the nurses’ personnel, health teams and civil society in general. Masfuri also invited the nurses to provide support and togetherness for nurses who are struggling in conflicts and difficult situations in other countries.
Razan al-Najjar was shot dead by the Israeli soldier on Friday, June 1. At that time, Razan was working voluntarily as a medical team amid a Palestinian protest against Israel in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military said on Saturday, June 2 that their party would investigate Razan's death, but the IDF believed that their troops are working in accordance with the standard operating procedures.
"The IDF consistently follows the operational procedures and reduces the number of casualties in the security fence in the Gaza Strip," the military said in a statement, as reported by the Washington Post.
"Unfortunately, the Hamas terror organization deliberately and methodically puts civilians in danger," said the military.
