TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Nature Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) Riau has installed two surveillance cameras to track Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) following the finding of its traces in Indragiri Hulu.
“We’ve installed two units of the camera (traps) to monitor the tiger,” said BBKSDA Riau Area I Mulyo Hutomo in Pekanbaru, on Friday, June 1.
The cameras were installed around the area where the traces of tiger found. It was allegedly the adult tiger.
The location is in Area I of palm plantation owned by PT Seko Indah, Lembah Village, Pasir Penyu, Indragiri Hulu. “From the camera, we can know if it often appears or only stops by to search for food. If it commonly appears, we will take further measure,” said Mulyo.
Earlier, the residents reported the appearance of the tiger at the beginning of this week. The report then confirmed after some traces of it found, allegedly looking for food.
Hutomo could not ensure yet where the Sumatran tiger came from. However, there are several cages of tiger around the area such as in national Park Bukit Tiga Puluh (TNBT). Recently, a female tiger named Bonito made an appearance in Pelangiran, Indragiri Hilir.
The four-year-old tiger had killed two residents. It considered as the longest process of search and evacuation of the tiger in Indonesia.
