TEMPO.CO, Samarinda - Harapan Baru speedboat with destination Malinau-Tarakan crashed in Tanjung Urong, Tanah Tidung, North Kalimantan on Tuesday, May 22, and has killed five from 35 passengers.
“There were 28 adults, four children, and 3 boat crews. Four adults and one toddler were dead,” said A Class Office Head of Search and Rescue of Balikpapan, Gusti Anwar Mulyadi, on Tuesday.
Based on the information gathered by the joint search and rescue (SAR) team, it was known that the rope of steering wheel was broken. Therefore, the driver could not control the boat.
“As a result, the speedboat was off control and directly led to the side of the river and hit the trees on the location,” said Octavianto as Chief of Operational Section.
He stated all the victim has been evacuated by SAR team. All the passenger also has been brought to the nearest hospital.
